Best Places to Elope in Michigan's Upper Peninsula
Growing up, I remember a few trips to the UP, and I will say, soon after you cross the Mackinac Bridge, it's clear the landscape is different. The rocky walls and dense forest along the highways stretch for miles. They create a vast wilderness, far from any signs of civilization. Some may find it eerie; I find it peaceful. Some of my favorite places are hidden away in the UP. Tahquamenon Falls (Tuh-kwa-men-on) has water that looks like root beer—no joke! Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore features stunning, colorful rock formations by the shore. Hiawatha National Forest (Hi-ah-wah-tha) is filled with dense pine trees that smell amazing.
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula may surprise those who have not ventured that far north before. The UP is much rockier and filled with remote wilderness. If you're a couple wanting to escape the crowds and don’t mind losing phone signal, the UP is a magical spot to elope.

Best Cliffside Elopement Locations
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of my favorite places in the UP. You can see the beautiful, colorful sandstone cliffs from hiking trails above. You can also take boat or kayak tours for an extra adventure on the water. Stunning arches form as water erodes the stone. The iron streaks color the rocks, creating a beautiful backdrop for eloping couples.
Black Rocks in Marquette are mysterious dark rock formations along the shores of Lake Superior. On a cloudy day, this spot feels like the Pacific Northwest. The rocky shore and stormy waves create a misty haze. What better way to celebrate getting married than jumping off the cliffs after your vows?
The Keweenaw Peninsula (Kee-when-awe) is the northernmost horn when you look at the map of Michigan. This stunning, remote area shines bright orange and red in the fall. It has many hiking trails that offer breathtaking views of Lake Superior. If you enjoy the history and charm of lighthouses, the Keweenaw Peninsula is full of them to explore.

Best Waterfall Elopement Locations
Tahquamenon Falls is a magical place for me. I first learned about it in middle school. The idea that the water looked like root beer was so intriguing! These falls have dark-colored water from the tannins from the decomposing forests. These falls are also the largest falls in the state. The trails offer many options depending on your mobility and fitness level. Many stairs are required to see the upper falls.
Bond Falls is a stunning cascade. It is among the most photogenic spots in the UP. These falls have great accessibility with a short walk to the viewing platforms. The trail loop is about 1 mile long and wheelchair accessible, so everyone can enjoy the views here. Bond Falls is an ideal place for couples who want something in the heart of the UP.
Laughing Whitefish Falls is between Munising and Marquette, with a 100-foot-tall slide waterfall. This rocky landmark is known for its secluded nature in the dense hardwood forest of the area. An ideal time to elope here is during the spring, as the snowmelt creates a more dramatic water flow.

Best Forest & Wilderness Elopement Locations
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is the largest state park. It offers vast wilderness and remote lakes. Couples can escape into the woods here. The old-growth trees are sure to amaze as you walk through the endless trails. The Lake of Clouds overlook is a must-see and is about ⅓ of a mile walk from the parking area, with a total hiking loop of 6.2 miles.
Hiawatha National Forest has 2 sections. One greets you as you exit the Mackinaw Bridge, and the other is a band more west in the UP. This adds to the amazing spots for eloping couples to choose from. There are many lakes, forest groves, and trails to choose from.

Final Thoughts
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has some of the most breathtaking and dramatic landscapes of the Midwest. It is one of my favorite places to explore when I want a more secluded escape from the chaos of modern life. Remember, when working on finding a location for your elopement day, lean into the feelings of what feels most like you. That can be a favorite place or a new adventure you both are yearning for.
